Kennebec Arsenal was built after the war of 1812 to protect borders of the U.S. Then the Arsenal was closed in 1901, and became part of Maine State Hospital and was renamed "Augusta Mental Health Institution". At the institute, 11,647 passed away, and a former patient has came out and said lot's of horrific things happened there causing lots of patients to die. The patients were buried in a unmarked grave, and nobody knows where. In the Augusta Mental Health Institution, they used treatments such as Hydrotherapy, radiant heat, ultra violet rays, diathermy, galvanism, fardism, electric needle, insulin shock treatments, and were injected with different chemicals. The other less harsh treatment was farming and industry treatment, and they had dances every week. In the 1960's they also started to accept alcoholics and people with addiction problems. In 2004 the institution closed and moved to another location and was sold to a developer. Information From:

Once they didn't have use for the bunker after the cuban missle crisis, they converted it into a transfer station for female prisoners and then converted as a mental health hospital. It was left abandoned in 1980's when they had no more use for it. It has been heavily vandalized, and now all buildings and any points of access are closed off. Photos from:

Rating: ★★☆☆☆ Swan Island, is located in the Kennebec river in central Maine. There are only two ways to get to the island, kayak or ferry. Everyone abandoned the island because their was pollution in the river from factories and mills dumping hazardous materials into the river. The island was inhabited by Native Americans, and early settlers. It was also a landing ground for historical figures Aaron Burr and Benedict Arnold. Most structures have been demolished, but their are still homes left, dating back to the 1700's. The whole island is not abandoned, and their are 332 people living on the island, During the summer the population is 1000 people, and their is a inn on the island. |
