Grossingers opened in 1914 as a boarding house started by Australian immigrants. The boarding house was called the 'Longbrook House' and had no water or electricity. They then bought a larger hotel with running water and electricity and from their they continued to grow and grow. During 1952 Grossingers made a name for itself by being the first resort to use fake snow. At the time, going to the Catskills was very popular for jewish New Yorkers and Grossingers was one of the best place to stay. Grossingers was described as "to resort hotels as Bergdorf Goodman is to department stores, Cadillac to cars, mink to furs, and Tiffany to jewelers … it has been called Waldorf in the Catskills." Many famous entertainers graced the night clubs, and even actress Elizabeth Taylor married Eddie Fisher in the grand dining room. Grossingers ha d pools, tennis, golf and skiing. By 1972 the resort had 35 buildings and 1,200 acres that accommodated 150,000 guests a year. Jennie Grossinger, the owner of the resort was a legend at the resort, she is known for always remembering faces and names as well as raising millions of dollars for World War ll and has a aircraft named after her. Jennie passed away in 1972 and Grossingers demise started. Air crafts were now more popular and people chose to fly to other destinations and less and less people went up to the Catskills. It closed in 1986 and the golf club was closed in 2018. It was demolished in 2018 and now none of the buildings remain. Grossingers is known to have inspired Dirty Dancing.
