Rockland first opened in 1926, and Dr.Russell Blaisdell was appointed as the head doctor. Patient were not admitted until 1931 and he was most interested in children care, he also looked at their needs and divided them into different buildings/wings/cottages based on their needs. Rockland used inulin shock therapy and electroshock theraoy and by 1959, they had more then 9000 residents and 2000 staff but during the two world wars those numbers dwindled because doctors and nurses continued to get drafted to the army. They had many incidents of patients escaping the ward, including some murders and kidnapping of the staff. In 1970 the children's ward closed. In the 1970's they also decided to deinstitutionalize patients and shrinked to the size of only 600 patients, and abandoned the buildings they didn't need anymore. They mostly only treat people with severe schizophrenia and manic depression. The land was used for some filming of Netflix's Orange is the New Black.
